From Fragile to Agile

Agile is built around an extraordinarily economical transformation. A white rat climbs across a cardboard shipping box marked FRAGILE, scratching away the letters F and R until only AGILE remains. Two letters disappear and the meaning reverses.

In Ukraine I saw a Legacy of War team sweep in and provide medical attention, heaters, fresh water and a friendly face to some very desperate people in a bombed out building. They also lent me one of their ambulances to work from, which turned out to be extremely useful when an angry babushka found me painting on her building and called the Police. I feel the least I should do is raise enough money to replace the number plates on the ambulance I hotted up..

Fragility becomes agility; vulnerability becomes adaptability. Created following Banksy's activity in Ukraine in 2022, the transformation inevitably carries a broader resonance. The damaged cardboard suggests something temporary, transported and exposed, while the rat—one of Banksy's oldest symbols of survival—refuses to accept the description it has been given. Rather than denying vulnerability, the work seems to suggest that survival depends upon the capacity to move through it.

The Rat as Survivor

The choice of the rat is particularly appropriate. Throughout Banksy's work, rats occupy spaces from which respectable society would prefer to remove them. They live underground, inhabit damaged environments and survive systems designed to eradicate them. Their power comes not from physical strength but from persistence and adaptation.

Due to the fact the production process involves Banksy attacking every print with a sharpened pizza cutter – they are each unique and will differ slightly from the one pictured.

Here the rat does something unusual: it edits language. Its claws turn an instruction printed by somebody else into a new description of itself. The gesture becomes almost political. The box says fragile; the rat refuses the label and rewrites it as agile.

The image therefore works particularly well in the context of Ukraine without requiring conventional patriotic imagery. There are no flags, soldiers or heroic figures. Resilience is represented instead by Banksy's perennial outsider: a small animal surviving in hostile territory.

Destruction as Part of the Artwork

The physical construction of Agile makes the idea considerably stronger. Banksy did not merely print simulated scratches across the word. According to the release, he personally attacked each of the fifty prints with a sharpened pizza cutter, cutting through the surface so that every example differs slightly.

The cardboard is therefore not simply an inexpensive support. It behaves like the wall in Banksy's street practice: something that can be scratched, damaged and altered. Destruction becomes part of production.

There is also a characteristic Banksy joke hidden inside this process. Collectors generally want limited-edition prints preserved in immaculate condition. Agile arrives deliberately damaged by the artist himself. The scratches that would normally constitute a condition issue are precisely what make each work unique.

Art in the Service of Something Else

The edition was produced to raise funds for the Legacy of War Foundation following Banksy's visit to Ukraine. Banksy stated that all proceeds from the fifty prints would go toward its work supporting people affected by the conflict. Demand was extraordinary: the release reportedly attracted approximately 1.3 million applications for just fifty works.

I've made 50 of these screenprints with all proceeds going to our friends in Ukraine.

That context matters. Agile belongs to a recurring strand within Banksy's practice in which the market value generated by his name is redirected toward humanitarian or political purposes. The artwork remains a highly desirable collectible, but its desirability becomes the mechanism through which money is raised.

Agile is ultimately one of Banksy's most concise demonstrations of how language can be transformed through intervention. He changes neither the box nor the circumstances surrounding it. He simply removes two letters. The rat remains small. The cardboard remains vulnerable. The scratches remain visible.

But FRAGILE has become AGILE. And perhaps that is the point: resilience does not mean that nothing has been damaged. It means learning how to move after the damage has occurred.
