Catalogue Note

Created during Better Out Than In, Banksy’s month-long residency in New York in 2013, Angel Head transforms a familiar classical sculpture into an ethereal, almost celestial apparition. Executed entirely with layers of sprayed paint, the marble bust dissolves into a constellation of white speckles, as though it were slowly disintegrating into stardust.

The work continues Banksy’s long-standing fascination with appropriating the language of classical art, yet here the intervention is remarkably restrained. Rather than vandalizing the sculpture, he dematerializes it. The solid permanence traditionally associated with marble gives way to something fragile, fleeting and almost cosmic, suggesting that even the greatest artistic achievements are ultimately subject to time.

The composition also echoes the artist’s recurring interest in memory and impermanence. Hovering somewhere between presence and disappearance, the angel seems less like a physical object than a fading recollection, inviting the viewer to contemplate the delicate boundary between permanence and oblivion. Elegant in its simplicity, Angel Head demonstrates that Banksy can achieve profound emotional resonance not only through satire, but also through quiet poetic understatement.
