I Fought the Law (Unsigned) has recorded 52 qualifying auction transactions since 2018, making it a relatively liquid part of Banksy’s print market. Released in 2004 as an unsigned edition of 500, the image reworks footage from the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan. Banksy replaces the attacker’s weapon with a paintbrush and changes the familiar refrain to “I fought the law and I won,” transforming an act of political violence into an act of artistic rebellion.
Before the pandemic-era expansion, the edition generally traded below £10,000. Its market changed dramatically in 2020, culminating in an auction record of £57,700 at SBI Art Auction that October. Other results above £45,000 followed during late 2020, while strong demand continued throughout 2021. At the height of the boom, collectors were prepared to pay several times the print’s pre-2020 value, temporarily erasing much of the hierarchy between Banksy’s strongest icons and his more specialized political images.
The correction began in 2022 and continued steadily thereafter. Five qualifying sales in 2024 produced a median price of £12,190, while seven transactions in 2025 established a median of £11,665—a further decline of 4%. The relatively narrow movement between the two years suggests that the most dramatic phase of the adjustment may now be over, although the market has yet to demonstrate any convincing upward momentum.
The latest sale, at Tate Ward Auctions in December 2025, achieved £8,750, retaining only 15% of the £57,700 peak. This is among the lower value-retention rates recorded across Banksy’s established unsigned editions and illustrates how aggressively secondary images were repriced during the speculative cycle. Nevertheless, continued transaction volume confirms that demand has not disappeared: the work remains liquid and collectible, but the law of market gravity appears to have won this particular round.
The signed market for I Fought the Law is substantially smaller, with 19 qualifying transactions recorded since 2018. The regular signed edition comprises 150 impressions, offering materially greater scarcity than the unsigned edition of 500. Artist’s proofs and the rare orange, pink, red and yellow colorways belong to separate markets and should not be used as direct valuation benchmarks for the standard signed edition.
The signed edition reached its auction record at Christie’s in April 2021, when an impression sold for £62,500. Several other results during 2020 and 2021 fell between approximately £50,000 and £60,500, establishing a meaningful premium over the unsigned edition during the height of the market. Unlike some of Banksy’s most aggressively repriced prints, however, the signed and unsigned auction records remained relatively close, suggesting that speculative demand temporarily reduced the premium normally associated with signature and scarcity.
Two qualifying sales in 2022 achieved £40,440 and £52,920, followed by a single result of £32,500 in 2023. The two sales included within the 2024 statistics produced a median of £26,790, representing an 18% decline from 2023. No qualifying sales have been recorded since October 2024, making the current market more difficult to assess and underlining the limited liquidity of the signed edition.
The latest transaction achieved £21,420 at Christie’s in October 2024, equivalent to 34% of the £62,500 peak. This particular impression was unusual: although signed, it was numbered 428/500 and therefore belonged numerically to the unsigned edition rather than the regular signed edition of 150. The result should consequently be interpreted with caution. The most recent standard signed impression, numbered within the edition of 150, sold for £32,160 at Forum Auctions in April 2024—a figure that may provide a cleaner indication of the regular signed market.
