Monkey Surfing on Bomb is one of the earliest manifestations of Banksy’s enduring fascination with the monkey as humanity’s surrogate. Here, the simian figure rides a falling bomb as though it were a surfboard, transforming an instrument of destruction into an absurd spectacle. Set against the radiating red-and-white backdrop of wartime propaganda posters, the composition is at once playful, anarchic, and deeply unsettling.

Created in 2000 and exhibited at Banksy’s seminal Severnshed exhibition in Bristol, the work encapsulates the artist’s early visual language: bold stencils, graphic immediacy, and razor-sharp irony. The monkey appears exhilarated rather than terrified, suggesting a civilization that has become dangerously comfortable with conflict, capable of turning even the prospect of catastrophe into entertainment.
