Created for Barely Legal in Los Angeles in 2006, Roadwork Rat features one of Banksy’s most beloved protagonists engaged in an unexpectedly ordinary task. Clutching a jackhammer beside a yellow roadwork warning light, the rat appears to be carrying out municipal maintenance, humorously reversing the roles of vandal and public servant.

Banksy’s rats have long symbolized those who exist on society’s margins: overlooked, resilient and impossible to eradicate. Here, the artist elevates the humble rodent into a worker literally reshaping the urban landscape. The irony is unmistakable. Those whom society labels as pests are often the very individuals responsible for bringing creativity and change to the city, while official authority merely attempts to regulate and contain them.
