Catalogue Note

In Security Protected, Banksy distills one of his recurring themes into a remarkably simple visual joke. Dominating the composition, the bold red words “SECURITY PROTECTED” proclaim absolute safety and control. Yet, quietly occupying the lower corner, one of Banksy’s iconic rats calmly prepares to cut through the very system that claims to be impregnable. The contradiction is immediate: the warning intended to deter intruders merely advertises a challenge waiting to be accepted.

Few motifs embody Banksy’s philosophy more completely than the rat. Like the graffiti artist, it lives on the margins, moves unnoticed and survives despite every attempt to eradicate it. Here, armed with nothing more than a pair of bolt cutters, the humble rodent effortlessly undermines the inflated confidence of institutions that promise total protection. The smallest figure in the composition becomes its true protagonist, reminding us that every wall can be breached, every lock picked and every authority questioned.

The work also reflects Banksy’s fascination with the language of public signage. By appropriating a familiar warning notice and introducing a single stencil, he transforms an everyday object into a satire of surveillance culture and institutional control. The vast white space reinforces the graphic immediacy of the image, allowing the viewer’s eye to oscillate between the reassuring slogan and the quietly subversive rat. Like much of Banksy’s finest work, Security Protected is humorous, economical and profoundly deceptive in its simplicity. Behind the joke lies a timeless reminder that no system is ever as secure as it claims to be.
