Catalogue Note

Created for Barely Legal in 2006, UFO belongs to Banksy’s celebrated series of modified oil paintings, in which carefully executed nineteenth-century landscapes are disrupted by distinctly contemporary intrusions. Here, however, the intervention extends beyond the painted surface itself. Three flying saucers hover over a tranquil coastal scene, projecting luminous green beams toward the earth, while a fourth UFO physically escapes the confines of the canvas, mounted above the ornate frame as though breaking free from the illusionistic space of the painting. The work becomes sculpture as much as painting, collapsing the boundary between fiction and reality.

Like many of Banksy’s finest appropriated oils, UFO derives its strength from the collision of incompatible worlds. The serene maritime landscape evokes the Romantic tradition, celebrating nature, exploration and mankind’s confidence in reason. The arrival of extraterrestrial spacecraft instantly destabilizes that certainty. Whether interpreted as invaders, observers or simply products of our collective imagination, the UFOs introduce the irrational into one of the most rational genres in Western art. The sublime is no longer found in nature itself but in our endless appetite for mystery, conspiracy and spectacle.

The three-dimensional flying saucer is crucial to the work’s meaning. By allowing one object to leave the picture plane, Banksy deliberately breaks one of painting’s oldest conventions. The viewer is reminded that the illusion extends beyond the canvas, just as media narratives, myths and popular culture increasingly blur the distinction between reality and fabrication. Long before “fake news” and viral internet conspiracies entered everyday vocabulary, Banksy was questioning how easily extraordinary stories can infiltrate ordinary life.
