The Houses That Shape the Market

Introduction — From Specialist Sales to a Global Auction Market

Banksy's auction market is unusual not simply because of its size, but because it operates simultaneously across several very different levels of the international auction industry. A unique painting worth several million dollars, a signed Girl with Balloon, an unsigned HMV and a relatively inexpensive edition may all be Banksy works, yet they circulate through different auction channels, attract different buyers and perform very different functions within the market.

At the top sit the major international auction houses, principally Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips, which dominate the market for important original works and exceptional editions. Beneath them is a large and remarkably active network of specialist and regional auction houses, particularly in the United Kingdom, whose repeated sales provide much of the liquidity and price discovery in Banksy's print market. Japan has developed another substantial domestic ecosystem, led by SBI Art Auction and supported by other national houses.

The International Market Leaders

Sotheby's — The Dominant House for Banksy Originals

No auction house has played a more important role in the development of Banksy's upper market than Sotheby's. Between 2018 and 2025, the Banksy Explained database records 69 completed sales of Banksy originals at Sotheby's, representing approximately $157.9 million in turnover. This corresponds to approximately 34% of recorded original-work transactions but more than 51% of their total value.

The figures reflect an extraordinary sequence of sales. In October 2018, Girl with Balloon sold for £1.042 million immediately before the work partially passed through a shredder concealed within its frame. Reconstituted as Love is in the Bin, it returned three years later and realised £18.582 million. Between those events, Devolved Parliament sold for £9.8795 million in 2019 and Show Me the Monet for £7.55 million in 2020. Sotheby's has also staged dedicated Banksy print auctions, confirming that its role extends from trophy originals to high-value editions.

Christie's — A Quarter of the Originals Market

Christie's occupies the second position in the market for Banksy originals. Between 2018 and 2025, the database records 35 completed original-work sales representing approximately $79.0 million, equivalent to approximately 17% of transactions and 25.6% of recorded turnover. Its defining transaction remains Game Changer, sold in London in March 2021 for £16.758 million, while Sunflowers from Petrol Station realised approximately $14.6 million in New York later that year.

Phillips — Contemporary Positioning and the Upper Market

Phillips ranks third in the originals market but remains a highly significant participant. The database records 29 completed original-work transactions worth approximately $42.6 million, representing 14.4% of transactions and 13.8% of value. Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search, sold in New York in 2023 for approximately $9.7 million, illustrates Phillips' characteristic positioning of Banksy within the wider language of contemporary art.

Bonhams — The Bridge Between Originals and Editions

Bonhams occupies a somewhat different position. The database records 16 completed sales of original works worth approximately $10.0 million, while its share of the print market is considerably greater. This makes Bonhams an important bridge between the upper market for unique works and the more liquid editions market. Its historical importance also predates the spectacular trophy prices of the late 2010s, giving it continuity across several phases of Banksy's secondary-market development.

The United Kingdom — The Centre of Print-Market Liquidity

Banksy's British origins continue to be reflected strongly in the geography of his market. London combines the international houses with an unusually dense network of specialist and regional auctioneers. Forum Auctions stands apart by volume: between 2018 and 2025 it accounted for roughly 24% of all completed Banksy print transactions in the global database and approximately 30.5% of UK transactions. Tate Ward has developed another substantial specialist franchise, while Roseberys, Chiswick, Lyon & Turnbull, Dreweatts, Sworders and other houses broaden the market further.

This breadth is one of the structural strengths of the UK market. Consignors are not dependent upon one or two dominant venues, and collectors can choose between international houses, specialist print auctioneers and regional firms. The result is a particularly competitive marketplace for editions and a deep reservoir of public comparables.

Continental Europe

Continental Europe represents a smaller but established component of the Banksy auction market. Artcurial has repeatedly handled both originals and editions, while Digard played an important role in the development of the French urban-art auction market. Scandinavian, Swiss, German and Italian houses add further geographic depth. Their importance lies less in aggregate global share than in connecting local collector populations to an international market and returning works held in continental collections to circulation.

The United States

Banksy's American auction market is structurally different from Britain's. New York operations of Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips dominate the upper end of original works, while Heritage Auctions, Artnet Auctions, LA Modern, Julien's and other domestic firms provide alternative channels. Julien's is particularly unusual: its share of original-work transactions is substantial despite much lower aggregate value, reflecting a concentration in event-driven and archival Banksy material rather than the conventional evening-sale trophy market.

Japan and Asia

Japan deserves particular attention because it has developed one of the deepest domestic auction markets for Banksy outside Britain. SBI Art Auction is the dominant Japanese participant in the Banksy Explained print database, while Mainichi Auction, Mallet Japan, NEW AUCTION and other domestic firms create a genuine local ecosystem. This distinguishes Japan from Hong Kong, where Banksy's upper market is more closely tied to the Asian operations of the international houses.

Originals and Prints — Two Different Auction Markets

The Banksy Explained data makes the structural distinction unusually clear. Between 2018 and 2025, the database records approximately $308 million in completed original-work sales from only 202 transactions, compared with approximately $160 million from 2,482 print transactions. Originals are intensely concentrated: Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips together account for approximately 90.7% of recorded value. Prints are fundamentally different, with transaction volume distributed much more broadly among global, specialist and regional houses.

This difference is economically logical. A consignor selling a multimillion-dollar painting benefits enormously from the international client network, marketing infrastructure and evening-sale prestige available at a major global auction house. The owner of a £15,000 unsigned screenprint faces a different calculation. Specialist knowledge, appropriate estimates, transaction friction and access to active Banksy print collectors may matter considerably more than global prestige.

The 2018–2025 Print Market Cycle

Auction-house structure cannot be separated from the market cycle. Banksy's print market expanded dramatically through 2020 and 2021 before correcting sharply and then entering a more selective phase. The charts below place auction-house market share within that broader history: transaction volume, turnover, median prices and the signed/unsigned relationship all changed materially over the period.

Market Share Is Not Market Influence

Auction-house rankings need to be interpreted carefully. Sotheby's dominance of original-work turnover is unequivocal, but turnover alone does not measure every form of influence. Forum Auctions, for example, cannot be compared meaningfully with Sotheby's by aggregate value: the two houses perform fundamentally different functions. Repeated print transactions establish price ranges, reveal changes in demand and allow collectors to observe premiums for signature, condition, rarity and colourway. Specialist houses therefore contribute disproportionately to price formation and liquidity.

Conversely, the international houses establish the ceiling of the market. When Sotheby's, Christie's or Phillips places a major Banksy alongside Basquiat, Warhol or Haring, the transaction helps determine not merely the price of that work but Banksy's position within the broader hierarchy of contemporary art. Regional houses perform a third function by connecting local collector populations to the international market.

A Mature Global Auction Ecosystem

The evolution of Banksy's auction market mirrors the transformation of the artist's wider position within contemporary art. What began as a relatively small market centred on Britain and specialist urban-art collectors has developed into an international system capable of handling everything from accessible unsigned editions to paintings worth tens of millions of dollars.

These institutions do not simply compete to sell the same objects. They occupy different positions within a market segmented by value, geography and collector profile. Understanding who sells Banksy, where they sell it and at what level is therefore essential to understanding the market itself. Auction houses are not passive venues through which prices happen to pass; collectively, they constitute the public trading infrastructure through which Banksy's market establishes value, generates liquidity and continuously defines its own hierarchy.

Methodology

The statistical analysis covers completed public auction transactions recorded in the Banksy Explained print and original auction databases from 1 January 2018 through 31 December 2025. It measures completed sales and recorded turnover, not all lots offered. Bought-in and withdrawn lots are not yet included in the denominator, so the figures should not be interpreted as sell-through rates. Auction-house aliases and branches are consolidated where appropriate for global market-share analysis; regional analysis follows the recorded sale location.
