Created for The Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem in 2017, Untitled (Landscape Barrier) belongs to the substantial group of original works and interventions Banksy produced specifically for the project. Located immediately beside the West Bank Barrier, the hotel was conceived as both a functioning establishment and an immersive installation in which the visual language of an old-fashioned colonial hotel was repeatedly disrupted by references to occupation, surveillance, conflict and territorial division. Contemporary accounts described traditional landscape and flower paintings elsewhere in the hotel protected behind military-style metal mesh, turning otherwise innocuous decorative pictures into images conditioned by security and restriction.
Here Banksy's intervention is considerably more subtle. An anonymous pastoral painting depicts an idyllic woodland landscape opening onto a stream, its trees framing an apparently unrestricted natural vista. The image has, however, been physically divided into a succession of tall, narrow adjoining sections. Each panel is independently articulated and pierced near its upper edge, producing a segmented structure that strongly evokes the repeating concrete slabs of the West Bank Barrier immediately outside the hotel.

The transformation creates a striking contradiction between image and object. The painted landscape remains continuous across the individual sections: trees, vegetation, water and sky visually pass from one panel to the next. Yet the physical object carrying that image has itself assumed the appearance of a wall. The barrier is therefore not represented within the landscape; the landscape becomes the barrier. An image traditionally associated with openness, distance and unrestricted territory is reconstructed in the architectural vocabulary of division.
This inversion is particularly resonant within The Walled Off Hotel. Banksy famously advertised the establishment as having “the worst view of any hotel in the world,” its windows looking directly onto the separation wall. Throughout the project, the conventional comforts and decorative conventions of hospitality were made to coexist with the political and physical reality immediately outside. The picturesque landscape performs a similar reversal: what might ordinarily function as an escapist window onto nature instead reproduces the structure that obstructs the actual view.
The work also extends a strategy central to Banksy's practice since the early 2000s and particularly associated with his Crude Oils and vandalised paintings. Rather than constructing an entirely new image, Banksy appropriates an existing decorative object and alters it sufficiently to overturn its original meaning. The anonymous landscape is important precisely because of its conventionality. It promises tranquillity, continuity and timeless nature; the intervention subjects that idealized world to the contemporary mechanisms of borders and territorial control.
Untitled (Landscape Barrier) is consequently among the quieter but conceptually precise works associated with the Walled Off Hotel. Its meaning emerges not from an added slogan or immediately recognizable stencil but from the physical reconstruction of the painting itself. Pastoral landscape and political architecture become inseparable: the view has been turned into the wall that prevents the view.
Note: the title Untitled (Landscape Barrier) is descriptive. No documented Banksy title has presently been established. The precise dimensions and constituent materials of the modified support also remain to be confirmed.
