A young boy, his eyes concealed beneath the brim of a baseball cap, rests his foot casually upon the universal © copyright symbol. Yet a spiderweb of cracks radiates across the picture plane, as though the very concept of ownership has been struck by a bullet.
The work encapsulates one of the great paradoxes of Banksy’s career. An artist who has relentlessly criticized the commercialization of art and actively encouraged the public to reproduce his imagery nevertheless became one of the most copied artists in the world. The fractured surface therefore operates on several levels: it suggests the fragility of copyright in the digital age, the impossibility of controlling an image once it enters the public imagination, and the tension between artistic freedom and commercial exploitation.
