Few images have become as closely associated with Banksy as the rat. Anonymous, resilient and endlessly adaptable, it serves as the artist’s unofficial alter ego, inhabiting the overlooked spaces of the modern city much like graffiti itself. In Gangsta Rat, Banksy transforms this humble urban pest into a charismatic icon of street culture. Wearing an oversized New York Yankees cap, a heavy chain and resting casually beside a portable boombox, the rat embodies the visual language of hip-hop while sitting proudly before an oversized pink peace symbol.
Executed in Banksy’s signature monochrome stencil style, the composition is remarkably clean and graphic. The vivid peace symbol provides the only burst of color, creating a striking contrast that immediately draws the eye while reinforcing the image’s central paradox: beneath the rebellious appearance lies a message of peace.
The rat occupies a unique place within Banksy’s visual vocabulary.
