Released exclusively through The Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem, the Souvenir Wall Sections are among the most distinctive collectibles ever produced under Banksy’s direction. Rather than creating conventional merchandise, Banksy chose to transform one of the most politically charged structures in the world—the Israeli West Bank Barrier—into a series of miniature sculptures that function simultaneously as souvenirs, artworks, and historical documents. First introduced in 2017 to coincide with the opening of the Walled Off Hotel, each wall section reproduces fragments of the barrier that Banksy began painting in 2005. Individually hand-painted by Palestinian artists working in Bethlehem, every example is unique, reflecting the constantly evolving appearance of the real wall and reinforcing Banksy’s commitment to supporting the local community.
The West Bank Wall
Stretching for hundreds of kilometers through the West Bank, the separation barrier remains one of the most controversial political structures of the twenty-first century. Since construction began in 2002, it has become both a physical and symbolic representation of one of the world’s longest-running conflicts.
Banksy first travelled to the West Bank in 2005, producing a series of murals that immediately attracted international attention. Rather than treating the concrete barrier as a symbol of permanence, he transformed it into an enormous public canvas, introducing images of hope, escape, childhood and peace into an otherwise oppressive landscape. Over the following years, these interventions became some of the artist’s most recognizable and influential public works.
The Souvenir Wall Sections preserve this history in miniature, allowing collectors to own not merely a replica of the wall itself, but a tangible reminder of one of Banksy’s most important artistic interventions.
Design and Production
Every sculpture is cast from resin and mounted on a textured base resembling fragment of limestone or concrete recovered from the surrounding landscape. Each section is then individually painted by hand, incorporating Banksy’s most celebrated West Bank imagery alongside layers of contemporary graffiti, handwritten messages, political slogans and signs of weathering.
Unlike industrially manufactured collectibles, no two examples are identical. Variations in color, graffiti, miniature figures and composition mean that every wall section possesses its own individual character, closely mirroring the ever-changing appearance of the actual barrier.
Many examples feature iconic Banksy images including the Girl with Balloon, the Peace Dove, the Flower Thrower, the Slingshot Rat, Donkey Documents, or large breaches cut through the wall revealing imagined landscapes beyond. Others include miniature figures actively painting or interacting with the wall, reinforcing the idea that the barrier remains a living canvas rather than a static monument. Each sculpture also carries an individual reference number on its underside, further distinguishing every example as a unique object despite belonging to an open edition.
The Walled Off Hotel
The opening of the Walled Off Hotel in March 2017 marked a significant expansion of Banksy’s engagement with the region. Described as offering “the worst view in the world,” the hotel overlooks the separation barrier and combines functioning accommodation with a museum, exhibition space and political installation.
Rather than simply attracting international visitors, the project was conceived to stimulate Bethlehem’s local economy by creating employment opportunities for Palestinian residents and encouraging tourism beyond the traditional pilgrimage routes. The souvenir shop forms an integral part of this wider project, with many objects—including the Souvenir Wall Sections—designed and finished locally.
In this context, purchasing one of these sculptures becomes more than acquiring a collectible; it represents participation in the wider social and economic objectives of the Walled Off Hotel itself.
Interpretation
Although modest in scale, the Souvenir Wall Sections embody many of the central themes that have defined Banksy’s career: political division, freedom, hope, resistance and the transformative power of art.
Banksy has consistently demonstrated that graffiti can alter the meaning of public space. By placing playful, poetic and often humorous imagery onto an imposing military structure, he challenges viewers to reconsider both the physical barrier and the political narratives surrounding it. The wall ceases to function solely as an instrument of separation and instead becomes a site of artistic expression, dialogue and human resilience.
The sculptures extend this idea by transforming fragments of conflict into intimate domestic objects. Removed from their original setting, they invite collectors to reflect upon the stories embedded within the wall while preserving the tension between beauty and violence that characterizes so much of Banksy’s work.
Collecting Significance
Today, the Souvenir Wall Sections occupy a unique position within Banksy’s catalogue. Neither edition, sculpture nor traditional souvenir, they exist somewhere between contemporary artwork, political artifact and historical document.
Their importance lies not only in their direct association with the Walled Off Hotel but also in their intimate connection to one of Banksy’s most ambitious and internationally recognized public projects. Because every example is individually hand-painted, collectors are acquiring an object that is inherently unique, reflecting the same continual evolution that defines the wall itself.
More than a souvenir of Bethlehem, each Souvenir Wall Section stands as a lasting testament to Banksy’s belief that art can confront political realities, preserve memory, foster dialogue and, however modestly, offer hope where division once seemed permanent.
