Auction Market Overview

Released in 2019 to coincide with Banksy’s celebrated Banksquiat mural, this edition pays homage to Jean-Michel Basquiat while simultaneously questioning the commercialization of artistic genius. Issued in two colourways, Black and Grey, each in a signed edition of 300, the print immediately attracted strong collector interest as one of the artist’s most significant releases of the Gross Domestic Product era. Its striking composition, cultural relevance and direct dialogue with one of the twentieth century’s most influential artists have ensured that Banksquiat remains one of Banksy’s most sought-after contemporary editions.

Like virtually every major Banksy print, Banksquiat benefited enormously from the unprecedented expansion of the print market during the pandemic. Early auction appearances in 2020 and 2021 established exceptionally high benchmarks, with the Black edition reaching $156,750 in August 2020 and the Grey edition achieving an impressive $216,215 in March 2022. These extraordinary prices reflected a period of intense speculative demand, when collectors competed aggressively for nearly every desirable Banksy edition.

As the broader Banksy market gradually normalized, Banksquiat entered a sustained period of correction. The Black edition has settled into a trading range generally between $50,000 and $75,000, while the Grey edition, traditionally the more desirable of the two colourways, now changes hands between approximately $47,000 and $77,000. Although these figures represent a significant decline from the market’s peak, they remain well above the original release price and demonstrate that collector demand continues to support the work.

Liquidity has remained healthy throughout the correction. The Black edition has recorded fifteen public auction appearances since 2020, while the Grey edition has appeared ten times. Sales have been spread across the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan and Switzerland, illustrating the international appeal of the image and providing collectors with a transparent and well-established secondary market.

From a market perspective, Banksquiat appears to have entered a phase of consolidation rather than continued decline. The speculative premium attached to Banksy’s market during 2020–2022 has largely disappeared, allowing prices to reconnect with the artistic significance and relative scarcity of the edition. The Grey edition continues to command a modest premium over the Black version, although that gap has narrowed considerably as the market has matured.

Among Banksy’s post-2018 editions, Banksquiat remains one of the strongest long-term propositions. Unlike works driven primarily by decorative appeal, it draws its importance from a rich conceptual dialogue between Banksy and Basquiat, two artists whose careers fundamentally challenged the institutions of the contemporary art world. As the market increasingly rewards historically significant imagery over short-term speculation, Banksquiat appears well positioned to remain one of the defining editions of Banksy’s Gross Domestic Product period.
