Keep It Real, 2002

Executed in 2002, Keep It Real belongs to Banksy’s celebrated series of early unique canvases exploring authenticity, artistic integrity and the growing commercialization of contemporary culture. Depicting a chimpanzee holding a placard reading “Keep It Real,” the work encapsulates one of the artist’s recurring messages: in a world increasingly driven by image, branding and market value, sincerity remains the most radical form of expression. This example is particularly distinguished by its rich crimson background, a colorway that lends the composition a striking emotional intensity. More dramatic than the neutral or brightly coloured variants from the series, the deep red transforms the image from a playful visual joke into a more urgent statement. It evokes the language of protest, revolution and warning, while simultaneously drawing the viewer’s attention to the deceptively simple message carried by the ape. The bold monochrome stencil appears to float against the saturated field, giving the composition an almost iconic presence.

“I use monkeys in my pictures for a lot of reasons, guerrilla tactics, cheeky monkeys, the fact that we share 98.5 per cent of our DNA with them. If I want to say something about people, I use a monkey.”

The provenance further enhances the importance of this example. It was exhibited at Santa’s Ghetto at the Dragon Bar in London in December 2002, one of Banksy’s earliest landmark exhibitions and a pivotal moment in his transition from street artist to internationally recognized contemporary artist.
